Extremely fine partly enameled silver charm chain which used to dangle from a long hairpin. The decoration consists of a Musical stone (qing) which is a pun for ‘Celebrate’ or ‘Auspicious Happiness’, a Butterfly ( Blessings & Happiness) and a Basket (Longevity & Abundance). Small bells hang down from chains with leaves. The word for Falling leaves (luoye) sounds like the expression for ‘Being happy with one’s occupation’ (leye). It is very likely that the parts which are not enameled, were once adorned with the bright blue feathers of the Kingfisher bird. The charm chain dates from the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912).
