Sage on a deer – (3316)
[3316]

Silver hat ornament in the shape of a sage on a deer. We have little doubt that the artisan wanted to depict Shou Lao even though he does not have the pronounced forehead of the God of Longevity. He is standing on clouds which confirm that he is an Immortal. Clouds also symbolize the ‘Granting of all wishes’ and the deer represents Longevity. The ornament dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Height 5.2 cm. Width 3.5 cm. Depth 1.2 cm.
