Two boys and a scroll – (3849)

Silver chain and lock decorated on one side with two boys and a scroll with the text ‘Da Ji Yang’ which means ‘May everything go smoothly’. The boys are surrounded by lucky symbols such as three bats (fu) and clouds (yun) which is a pun ‘May you have good luck’ (fuyun). Depicted above the scroll are a Peach (Longevity) and an Osmantus flower (Distinguished sons). On the other side of the lock, a Magpie sits on a branch with a Plum flower while trying to catch a bug. A Magpie (xique) and a Plum flower (mei) lead to the pun ’May your joy reach up to the level of your eyebrows’ (xishang meishao). Five small bells are attached to the lock by chains in different lengths. The lock is marked with the name Yong Heng (永恒) and ‘Da Ji Yang’ which means ‘Lucky sheep’. It dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Lock: Width 7.3 cm. Height 5.2 cm. Depth 0.8 cm.
