Silver scent box or ‘vinaigrette’ which was worn from the belt. A piece of cloth drenched in perfume was inserted into the box and helped against unpleasant smells. The scent box is decorated with, what we believe, is the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin as she is seated on a Lotus flower. She is flanked by two fairies. The top of the scent box is decorated with an Osmanthus flower (Distinguished sons) and Shou characters (Longevity) grace the ‘handles’. A branch of Bamboo (Peace) complements the picture. The box dates from the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 5.4 cm. Width 3.7 cm. Depth 1.3 cm.
