Silver needle case on a chain. The case is shaped as a Vase which represents Peace. The vase is decorated with an old sage (Longevity) on one side and a Lotus flower (Continuous Harmony) on the other. Also depicted on the neck of the vase are Plum flowers. The shoulders of the vase are decorated with Lion masks (Harmony, Blessings, Protection as well as High Rank). The five petals of the Plum flower symbolize the Five Blessings, Old age, Health, Wealth, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death. The chain is attached to the tubular needle holder inside. Dangling down from the vase is a small bell in the shape of a cluster of Peaches (Longevity). The hook is shaped as a circular Shou character which means ‘May you have Longevity as well as Completeness (yuanman). The circular shape (yuan) of the hook represents ‘Fulfillment’ or ‘Completeness’. The unmarked needle case dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947).
