Large pendant in the shape of a Buddhist Lion or Fu Dog which symbolizes Harmony, Blessings, Protection as well as High Rank. It was attached to a chain and worn by a small boy as it was believed that it protected him against evil spirits. This pendant is made of Paktong also called Beitong or Nickel Silver. Paktong (白銅) literally means ‘White copper’ and was used to imitate sterling silver. In fact it contains about 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc and no silver at all. It was first known in China during the Qing period (1644 – 1912) before it became fashionable in the West. The Lion is funny because its ears and tongue moves. It dates from the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Width 10.2 cm. Height 7 cm. Depth 1.5 cm.
