Fu dog with foreigner’s face - (3535)
[3535]

Lacquered in gold and black, this amusing ornament once graced a piece of furniture. We discovered it in Macao so we assume that the carver saw a Portuguese national with his undulating powdered wig, Western nose, long curled moustache and round eyes, and decided to record his ‘lion-like’ features for posterity. The result is striking and the carving exceptionally good. The carving dates from the late 1700’s to early 1800’s and entered our collection from Macau in 1993. Height 7.3 cm.
