Burlwood brush washer carved as Liu Hai's three-legged toad. Liu Hai was a civil servant and alchemist in 10th Century China, who somehow became involved with a huge three-legged toad. It was his best friend and would carry him anywhere he wished. Sometimes the toad would hide in a well and Liu Hai would lure him out with a shiny gold coin. This may have been the reason that Liu Hai is now revered as a God of Prosperity. The washer dates from the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 8.2 cm. Width 6.1 cm. Height 6.0 cm.
