Pair of small lacquered carvings depicting a stag and a deer. The deer is a symbol of Longevity because it can live for a long time. Two deer (lu) form the rebus ‘May everything go smooth’ (lulu shunli). The deer (lu) is a pun for ‘road’ so two deer mean ‘all roads’. The two carvings were originally part of a piece of furniture or a bed. They date from the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Height 10 cm. Width 5 cm.
