Gold lacquered figure of an elephant on a pedestal. This charming but primitive carving originally formed part of a piece of furniture or bed and was found in Hong Kong in 1988. The Elephant is considered an auspicious animal because the Chinese character for elephant, ‘Xiang (象) has the same pronunciation as the word for ‘Auspicious’ or ‘Lucky’, Xiang (祥). The carving dates from the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Height 6.8 cm. Width and depth 2.9 cm.
