Pair of lacquered wooden ornaments depicting small dogs in a rocky landscape. The dog is one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Its image is seen as a ‘Protection’ and paper dogs were often used as funerary objects to protect the deceased in the afterlife. The coming of a dog indicates future Prosperity. These ones, which once formed part of a piece of furniture or a bed, came from Shanghai in 2007 and date from the late Qing period (1644 – 1912). Height 8.5 cm. Width 16.5 cm. Depth 2 cm.
