Lacquered hand-carved wooden board which once formed the top part of a wedding bed. Numerous figures are occupied with all kinds of pursuits, for instance a wealthy man descending from a sedan chair, musicians playing different instruments, people worshipping in front of an altar, fan-bearers waving cool air to an old man and woman, and other activities. On each side of the carving is a depiction of a flute-playing boy on a phoenix. A pair of phoenix flying (funghuang yufei) leads to the saying ‘May you have a harmonious marriage’ (shuangfeng heming). The two boys with their flutes announce the arrival of many sons. The carving was made at the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 182 cm. Height 25 cm. Depth 3 cm.
