Yawning Daruma – (4576)

Bodhidharma or Daruma, as he is called in Japan, was the founder of the Zen sect Buddhism. The carving shows him while he is yawning which presents an amusing face. He holds prayer beads in his right hand and a fly whisk in his left. His cloak is decorated with Osmanthus flowers which in China symbolize a wish for Distinguished sons. The carving is signed Zhongyou (忠友). Height 3.8 cm. Width 3.5 cm. Depth 2.9 cm.
