The Mandarin Duck (鸳鸯) is a medium-sized duck species found in East Asia. In traditional Chinese culture, mandarin ducks are believed to be lifelong companions, unlike other species of ducks. Hence they are regarded as a symbol of conjugal affection and fidelity. This carving of a mandarin duck does not show the brilliant colors of the real duck but it is nevertheless a successful rendition. The signature on the bottom reads Songshan (松山) or Songzan in Japanese. Length 4.5 cm. Width 3.0 cm. Height 3.4 cm.
