Boar in military attire – (4603)
[4603]

A boar is posing as a fearless soldier dressed in a military uniform. There is little doubt that the boar depicts Zhu Bajie (猪 八戒), who was one of the three helpers of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang during his famous journey to the West. Zhu Bajie was half pig, half human just like this carved soldier. The workmanship is exceptional. The boar has horn eyes with black pupils and wears decorative breast plates. The signature reads Heng Tang (恒堂). Height 6.2 cm. Width 3.8 cm. Depth 2.4 cm.
