Shishi are also known as Chinese guardian lions or Imperial guardian lions, simply called ‘Shi’ (獅) in China. They are often called ‘Foo Dogs’ in the West and are believed to have powerful mythic protective powers which ward off evil spirits. In Japan Shishi are called Komainu (狛犬). This one has a snarling expression on its face which has inlaid black eyes. The carving is signed with the name Xi Jiu (喜久). Length 4.2 cm. Width 3.5 cm. Height 3.3 cm.
