A rooster standing over an egg has a double symbolic meaning. The egg represents the birth of many children and the rooster symbolizes a wish for a son to become a high official because its head crest (jiguan) is a pun for ‘Official’ (guan). The carving of the bird is very well done and its eyes are inlaid with specks of glass. The carving is signed by Chinese master Song Shan (松山) and dates from the 1960’s or 1970’s. Height 5.9 cm. Width 3.2 cm. Depth 3.3 cm.
