Eight bubble-eyed gold fish – (2784)
[2784]

Bracelet consisting of eight beads, each hand-carved from a kernel of the Chinese ‘Ganlan’ fruit. Meticulously carved, each bead features two fantail gold fish swimming among lotuses. According to Chinese belief, a Fish represents Wealth and Prosperity because the Chinese word for Fish, yú (魚), also translates to ‘Abundance’ or yù (裕). The Lotus flowers symbolize Continuous Harmony because the Chinese word for Lotus is ‘Lianhua’ (莲花) or ‘Hehua’ (荷花). The word ‘Lian’ can also mean Continuous (连) and ‘He’ sounds like Harmony (和). The beads are not signed and date from the latter part of the 20th century.
