The cabbage (baicai 白菜) is a pun for Wealth because it has the same pronunciation as the word ‘Money’ or ‘Wealth’ (cai 财). To top it off the boy is holding a gold bar (ingot) in his hand which also expresses a wish to get rich. The boy himself symbolizes a wish for many sons. The modern carving is signed. Height 3.7 cm.
