Funny face toggle carved from a Tagua Nut. In view of trade restrictions in elephant ivory as well as animal welfare concerns, nuts from the ivory palm are often used as a substitute for elephant ivory today, and traded under names such as vegetable ivory, palm ivory, corozo, tagua, or jarina. When dried out, the brown nut which resembles a small avocado can be carved just like elephant ivory. Tagua Nut is found in a number of countries in South America. This funny grimaced face was carved in 2013 in Shanghai. We bought it straight from the artist. Total length including strap 24 cm. Nut size: Height 5.4 cm. Width 3.8 cm. Depth 3.8 cm.
