Hand-carved miniature made from the kernel of a ‘gânlan’ fruit which is a very hard material. It is a modern carving and depicts a boy clutching a huge veiltail goldfish which has prominent protruding eyes. Even though most people believe that the origin of the ’veiltail’ lies in China, the fish was actually first bred in Philadelphia in around 1890. In this carving the Gold fish symbolizes ‘Abundance” and the Boy holding it represents a ‘Wish for many sons’. Also depicted are a lotus leaf and flower which stand for ‘Continuous Harmony’. This small object is very nicely carved but not signed. Length 3.0 cm. Diameter 1.9 cm.
