Iron weight – (3903)
[3903]

Iron weight which once formed part of a traditional Chinese set. These weights were used to weigh all kinds of goods at markets. In China the units were re-standardized during the late 20th century to make them metric. Many of the units in China were formerly based on the number 16. This one was acquired in Shanghai and, according to the seller, dates from the Ming period (1368 – 1644). It is however difficult to date iron since it corrodes easily. Height 9.8 cm. Width 5.5 cm. Depth 5.3 cm. Weight around 880 grams.
