Pair of hand-carved wooden lanterns lacquered in black and gold. The carving depicts Birds, Peonies (Wealth and Honor), Plum blossoms (Five Blessings), Osmanthus flowers (Distinguished sons), Acanthus leaves (Good Luck & Happiness) and Butterflies (Blessings & Happiness). The four corners are topped by Narcissus flowers, symbols of Good Fortune and Prosperity. The lanterns date from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912) and were found in Shanghai. Height 52 cm.
