Gold and black lacquered statue of the Amida Buddha with the thumb and index finger on each hand forming a circle. He is standing on a very elaborate stand with several levels decorated with Buddhist symbols, clouds, auspicious flowers and ‘Shisa’ which resemble a cross between a lion and a dog. The Buddha is standing on a lotus flower which is revered in Japan for its ability to rise from the dirty, murky waters to bloom into a beautiful pure flower and therefore symbolizes attaining enlightenment. He is backed by a halo of fire which also serves as a backdrop for another very small depiction of the Buddha squatting on a lotus flower. The statue was made around 1750 during the Edo period (1600 – 1868). Height 82 cm.
