Impressive Satsuma (see QF 0408) pot and cover which is profusely decorated with two large scenes of samurai warriors of which one depicts a fight with swords drawn. Other scenes depict monkeys grooming one another, ducks and ducklings, a mountain village in the clouds and a scene with people pursuing different activities in front of an altar. The background is formed by flying phoenixes surrounded by gold leaf applications. The cover is graced by a mythical lion called Komainu or shishi dog in gold leaf. Unknown creatures with forked tails form the grips on the sides. The pot is marked on the bottom ‘Yaki’ and probably dates from the first part of the 20th century. Height 63 cm. Width 27 cm.
