1. Introduction

Colon statues are wooden figurative sculptures within African art which originate from the colonial period. The statues often depict colonial officials such as civil servants, doctors, pilots as well as soldiers and are painted in bright and glossy colours. Colon statues were very popular among the Baoulé in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and achieved international popularity after the decolonization of West Africa. The Lowlands-collection has a large selection of colons which were mainly discovered in Ghana and date from the 1960’s and later.
