Melon with tendrils -(6631)
[6631]

A melon with tendrils and a small butterfly decorate this carving which is made of a pale greyish celadon jade. The carving is very nicely done but the material has some light brownish spots. A melon (瓜: guā) symbolizes 'Family Unity'. Melons hold out the wish that the family will, like the moon, stay round, large, whole and united. The butterfly represents 'Joy and Marital Happiness'. In addition the word for butterfly is pronounced in homonym with the word 'die' which means '80 years old'. This toggle came from Taipeh in 1985. Length 4.1 cm. Width 2.8 cm. Depth 1.8 cm. Weight 30.3 grams.
