In 1991 we visited, together with some friends, the Hanshan Temple in Suzhou (苏州寒山寺), known amongst the locals as the Cold Mountain Temple. During our visit we noticed some very nice calligraphy in a small room. One of our Chinese friends translated the texts of some of them. One text especially appealed to us. It showed the words “hu tu dian hao” which roughly translates to “Don’t always try to be smart”. The calligrapher, mr Chi Guang (1921-2014) appeared to be the guardian of the temple complex and he welcomed us as old friends. In those days visitors from abroad were not that frequently seen in Suzhou and mr Chi insisted to mention our meeting on his scroll. Back in Hong Kong the calligraphy was hung in our office and when one of the staff tried to be a smart alec, we would point at mr Chi’s scroll which of course always created a few giggles.
