Cai Shen – The God of Wealth - (4892)

Cai Shen is easily recognizable as he is usually depicted with a gold bar in his hands. He is the Chinese God of Prosperity worshipped in Chinese indigenous religion and in Taoism. This bronze statue shows him with a gold bar in one hand and the other hand raised. He is standing on clouds. One leg rests on some unknown mythical creature. His back has a square opening for storing slips of paper with good spells on them which were meant to give the statue a soul. This bronze dates from the Ming period (1368 – 1644AD). The gilding is rubbed. Height 11 cm.
