Walnut Monkey under pine tree - (1610)

Very small seal carved from a piece of walnut. Such seals were often worn as beads which explains the hole through the centre. On the other side is a carving of a monkey under pine trees. The monkey is seen as a symbol of longevity and is often shown carrying the 'Peach of immortality'. The pine trees represent longevity as well. The seal dates from the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 2.0 cm. Width 1.7 cm. Height 1.1 cm.
