Grooming set with profession amulet – (0793)
[0793]

Silver grooming set with an octagonal medallion decorated on one side with the Eight ‘Trigrams’ (See Quick Find 4139) as well as a Yin Yang symbol and on the other side with a profession amulet (See Quick Find 0289). There are four ‘tools’, a tongue scraper, an ear scoop, a toothpick and a pair of tweezers. We believe that the tongue scraper may have been added later as it is of a different type. The tongue scraper which was used to clean one’s tongue is embossed with a lotus flower, symbol of Continuous Harmony. Two small bells shaped as peaches symbolize Longevity. The book on the amulet is marked with the name of the maker Bao Chang (寳昌). The set dates from the end of the Qing (1644–1912) to the early Republic period (1912–1947). Total length 41.5 cm.
