A monkey sits on the back of a grazing horse. This a typical Chinese depiction full of symbolism. A monkey (hou) riding a horse (ma) is a pun ‘May you immediately be promoted to the rank of marquis’ (Mashang fenghou). The carving is executed very well. The eyes of the horse and the monkey are inlaid in black. The carving is signed by the prolific Hong Kong master carver Songshan (松山). Height 4.9 cm. Width 3.1 cm. Depth 1.8 cm.
