The ‘Four Happiness Boys’ is an ancient Chinese image of two interconnected boys to create the illusion of four boys lying in four directions. The carving symbolizes ‘four happinesses joined together’, which basically were a wedding night, passing the imperial exams, running into a friend in a faraway place and rain after a long drought – instances all considered to be among life’s major fortunes in ancient China. Each boy is depicted in two positions, on his back and on his belly. The small object is executed in great detail by carver Yong San (永三). Length and width 4.5 cm. Depth 2.1 cm.
