Four immortals in relief carving signed by Wu Cangshuo - (6257)
[6257]

Shoushan-stone seal carved in relief with four celestial beings in the clouds. All four have fat earlobes which were believed to bring good fortune. Traditionally, Buddha images have rounded fat earlobes. One immortal seems to have a bottle in his hands, perhaps filled with the elixir of life, another one leans on a staff which symbolizes longevity, the third one holds a round object, possibly the sacred ‘Flaming Pearl’, and the fourth one wears a large sun hat on his back and a rosary in one hand which is an object connected with Buddhism. The material used to create this seal is of a very nice creamy color and the relief carving is of outstanding quality. The text on one side mentions two names ‘Cang Shuo’ and ‘Wu Jun’ (倉硕 & 吴俊). The name Cang Shuo refers to Wu Cangshuo (吴倉硕) who lived from 1844 to 1927. Wu was a famous seal carver, calligrapher and painter and the first president of the ‘Xileng Printing Society’(西冷印社) in Hangzhou. The seal is dated in the ‘ding hai’ year (丁亥年) which corresponds to 1887. Height 12.9 cm. Width 2.8 cm. Depth 3.0 cm. Weight 268 grams.
