Sedan chair bearer – (9882)
[9882]

Partly glazed funerary figure of a sedan chair bearer. He is recognizable as a bearer because one of the two poles of the sedan chair could be inserted on his left shoulder. Often sedan chairs, carried by four bearers form part of a group of musicians and dignitaries which accompanied the deceased to the afterlife. The glaze is still in fine condition and shows lots of iridescence but most of the color on his cold-painted face and hat have been washed off. The bearer dates from the Ming dynasty (1368 – 1644). Height 19.8 cm. Width 5.1 cm. Depth 4.6 cm.
