A head band called a 'fa lap' was very fashionable during the Republican period (1912 – 1947). The 'fa lap' was only worn by married women and was usually decorated with beadwork, gold or silver ornaments or jade flowers. The jade flowers on this 'fa lap' are however much older. The eight small Buddha’s are made of jadeite (fei tsui) and are younger. They were most probably made towards the end of the 19th century. The large nephrite flower in the centre has a small jadeite inset. The head band was found in Shanghai and dates from around 1920. Width of head band 25 cm. Height 6 cm.
